Welcome
The Mystery Writer
Have you ever played that game of choosing which fictional character you most resemble? Not, which would you would most like to be ... that way lies certain disappointment ; you’ll never match up. The clue’s in the name – fiction. No, which one are you like? Which wonderful author understood you well enough to depict you? For me it has to be The Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’. One ray of sunshine, one whiff of spring air and I’ve tossed the duster skywards and sprinted for the shore. ‘Hang spring-cleaning! This is better than whitewashing!’ Impulsive ... romantic. Mmm sometimes. Which is why my husband insisted we move to the seaside; it was less far to come and fetch me!
From Mystery to Mainstream Fiction
In a roundabout way this release also explains why my writing has evolved the way it has. Having had three rural mysteries published in hardback, audio and large print (The Amos Cotswold series) – all under my maiden name of A. M. Story (see www.amstory.co.uk) - and penned two further e-book mysteries (The Octopus Affair and The Dare Society), I hit upon the idea behind The Last Chatelaine published in hardback in 2010. This necessitated a move away from genre mystery to a more general fiction. Whilst I will always be drawn to mystery (blame my maiden name - Miss Story – say it quickly!) I craved a freer hand. So I removed the hood from the hawk and let it soar. The Giveaway is the result of writing what I wanted ... how I wanted.
About the Author
The Giveaway took three years to complete. In the midst of which I, my husband, an ancient rescued terrier (our dog, not the old man) two cats, and a wagon full of plants, upped sticks and moved from Shakespeare’s Stratford to the South Devon coast. Where, when I’m not writing, or walking the seafront, I busy myself planting the garden of one hundred hydrangeas. Since we brought only four of those with us, I detect another long-running saga!
