THE GIVEAWAY - TAKE 1
'IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR
ILLUSIONS ABOUT YOUR FATHER ...
READ NO FURTHER'
Thirty years after her mother's death, businesswoman Adele Buckingham bites the poisoned apple her stepmother proffers and is stripped of her identity. Even her name is someone else's; her childhood's foundation - and everything she knew about her father - a lie.
'Of course Daphne killed her. I wouldn't be surprised if you find a little Mum-shaped doll with pins in her there somewhere. Who knows Ade, but I reckon if you're the subject of someone's hatred - for two decades - it's odds on you'll eventually succumb to the big "C" or coronary disease ... or even sheer bloody melancholia.'
Intrigue in British History
In her quest to discover why her father betrayed them, Adele exposes an eugenic horror perpetrated during the first world war.'You're not with the press are you Miss Buckingham? What a scoop such a thing would be - even now. Can't you just hear all those cats squealing and yelping as they leap around in freedom.'
'I envisaged a large chest and too many bees myself.'
A shameful episode in British history - the secret of which has been guarded for decades by intrigue, deception ... and murder. Along with this revelation Adele unearths not only a score of enemies who can ill afford their ancestors' actions to surface, but also a truth so disgusting she will do almost anything to deny it.
Soothed by its gentle swaying I favoured the swing by the pond, watching multi-coloured shubunkins dart across the water and dive beneath the lilies - surfacing as someone else. The difference was I knew every one of these creatures. The one with big red splodges on its head was Baubles. Bangles was ringed in purple and Beads sported a fine row of black spots down his back. Blackie was a misnomer, being a deep grey, and Monet - well, he was just that, more fleeting impression than fish. Like my mother....
